  FROM "THE CITY OF LAKES"
COMES THE LIVING,
BREATHING, EVOLVING
MINNEAPOLIS FREE MUSIC SOCIETY

In a city rich with theatre (home to a theatre market ranked third-largest in the U.S.) and an abundance of visual and performing artists, it is of no surprise that the MFMS draws such a diverse and talented group of improvisers to their monthly event at the Acadia Cafe in Minneapolis's West Bank.

From the collectives own mouth, and a nod to the many inspirational improv collectives that have come before; "The music is never written, rehearsed or otherwise preconceived. The members of the society play living music that is subject to, and informed by, the immediate environment. There are no soloists, and no accompanists. The music is performed on an intuitive level with a high degree of awareness."

Listen to excerpts from "Joanie" or "Chachi" and find yourself in a dimly lit, underground, post-apocalyptic jazz club lost in a sound that reminds you that the world has fallen apart around you while simultaneously carrying you away from it. Or let "Poem From Jail" invoke an entirely different and totally surreal vision, reassuring the listener that no matter where their sessions lead, the result is always exactly what they profess in their mission statement.

"It is our belief that the process of collaboration provides important moments of cross-fertilization that enrich our individual creative paths … it is our mission to create new musical worlds that can challenge and confront the old, while also acknowledge the musical traditions from which we have emerged."

  SLOW SOUND —
THE MINDFUL PRACTICE OF
EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC AND SOUND

"Millions of people suffer from various stages of tinnitus; Slow Sound wishes to avoid contributing to this malady. At the end of a Slow Sound concert, we want the audience to leave with their minds ringing, not their ears." - Excerpt from Slow Sound [A Manifesto by Glenn Bach]

Slow Sound is not a label, a band, or an artist. it is a philosophy, an approach and a process. It's creators define it as "the mindful practice of experimental music and sound." Their first ever "Slow Sound Festival" was successfully completed over a six-day stretch in Long Beach, California this past September. A platform was given for those artists who focus on quiet, lowercase, or otherwise low impact sound, and for those “louder” artists willing to experiment with quieter material.

output:NOISE recently experimented with the Slow Sound concept, and will be releasing several tracks on our upcoming release from a recording session which had been directly inspired by this philosophy.

  NOISE HOUSE —
A COMMUNITY MUSIC EXPERIMENT
WASHINGTON DC

The spirit of musical experimentation and collective improv is shacking up in the Nation's Capital at NoiseHouse. This monthly recorded self-described "jam party" is akin to output:NOISE in that it networks a variety of musicians to play together, experiment and push musical boundaries under it's umbrella.

Some goals of the NoiseHouse organisation are to develop their space as a community center and collective for like-minded musicians which would provide access to instruments and recording equipment to it's members.

You can find information, photos, streaming recordings and event listings at www.noisehousemusic.com
